I’m about to pull the trigger on a new set of tires. These will mainly be used on a daily driver, with maybe a HPDE or two if they survive long enough. Not looking to spend a ton of money, but that can’t really be avoided with these odd sizes.
Any input?

Personally I’d get the Michelin Pilot Super Sports, maybe a little more pricey, but I’ve never had a bad Michelin tire.

I have had my eye on those. Mainly because they’re a decent bit lighter than comparable tires in the same size. I’m interested to hear any feedback on them, too.

Yup, ran a set in 275/40/17.
I liked them and they performed pretty well. My only gripe, and it’s shallow as hell, is that the tread pattern doesn’t look cool.

I really liked the DWS as a shockingly good all-season. Never tried the DW though.

I would suggest the Yokohama Advan v105, it’s a decent tyre that’s not overly expensive

I have the DWS and use it as a year round all season in the DC area. Have it on RWD 328i and it’s fantastic. Much quieter than stock and the grip is amazing in the dry and wet. Even decently good in snow. Sidewalls are a tad softer than the runflats I was using before (terrible tires other than the super sharp handling due to how stiff they were). Very long lasting, I have about 15k on the set on my 328i and they still look great and show little wear. They have a super high tread rating and are priced fairly. Buy with confidence.
Put a set on my 4Matic C300 and they are fantastic for daily driving. I’m just waiting on the stock tires on my 335i to wear down so I can buy another set lol.

I’ve driven on them before and think they are a better tire...but had wear issues. Not sure why as I think they’re only 300AA...
I think I may eventually get a set and put them on a spare set of wheels I have for track use only.

Fair, the other option are the RE-71R’s they will get greasy if you stay out on the track for 30 mins, but they are sticky as hell for autox

Had them on my S2000. Decent grip, rides well, quiet...but tread wear was horrendous. The car wasn’t being driven hard by any stretch but they lasted a very short amount of time.

Awesome...thanks for sharing!
I am trying to find a good balance between performance and comfort for daily driving on some crappy roads, and I think these may be the ticket. My only worry is that the sidewalls might be a little too soft for my liking, but I suppose that is a compromise made for daily driving comfort.

Oh yeah I did look at those...couldn’t find the rears in a size I liked. I am thinking about picking up a set for my dedicated track car when I wear out its current tires.

I noticed the softness only because I was coming from super stiff runflats in the BMW. I didn’t notice too much extra softness on the C300 when I switched, but that car was running mismatched tires when I bought it so it was just a big improvement.
Noticed you mentioned how lame the pattern is, and yeah I totally agree haha. Just looks like any old economy tire, you have no idea how much grip there is just based on looking.

I have these on my S2000. I’d say maybe they’re a bit soft and numb but I suspect my shocks are to blame. Grip is okay after the first hundred miles or so, don’t be stupid before that.

Haha yeah...when I was young and dumb(er) I bought a set of tires on tread pattern alone. They looked awesome, but I could barely get moving from a stop in the rain. Learned my lesson...

Out of curiosity, how does the treadwear rating compare to other tires you’ve used on your S2000?

Stupid? Me? In the first drive after winter in a car with too much power and terrible balance?
Never.

Any ideas how they fare on heavy higher horsepower cars? I’ve heard of that tire being suggested by Miata guys as well.

Had a set of Contis on an ‘87 300D way back when (I’m that old) and I’d always heard they were ‘soft compound’ tires. I pretty much went Goodyear after that - whatever was sportiest yet offered a good ride. Tires are important - I’d say get the best ones you can afford. Of course, the issue is that once they’re on the car, they’re on the car. They won’t replace them for free unless there’s a recall or one of them is just bad.

And, looking at the tread pattern, they seem to be designed to go in the wet. Always important.

if you have a 2000kg saloon with 450hp, these boots are the way to go. Quiet, stick like a cat on carpet, and last for 40k! They did this on my car!! For you wannabes in mitsu boxes, get a car that can utilise this tyre, or stay with your goodyear RS-A’s. These are the ultimate heavy saloon tyre...bar none. Bentleigh and Brabus can’t be that stupid??

These will hold a sustained 1g in a Miata. I’d get the ZII * spec but the DW are known for high tread life and amazing wet grip.

I’d agree on the importance of tires. The crappy thing is around here (Detroit Metro) my tires rarely make it to being replaced due to wear. I usually end up destroying one on a pothole and have to replace the others. Understandably, I’m a bit hesitant to buy the most expensive ones I can.

And I should have asked - what’s the DD they go on?

I ran through a set of these on my rx8. They lasted ~23k miles before the rears that I didn’t rotate enough got worn to the cords from some camber wear. It was autoxed.
For a DD, they are a good tire. Fairly quiet, great in the rain and the ‘relatively’ soft sidewall absorbs the road better than some full blown performance tires.
The tire is always one of my recommendations for most people looking for a street oriented summer tire.

Too rich for my blood, I went with 285/40/17 Nitto NT555 on my Camaro and they are outstanding wet and dry

I don’t with those, but the predecessor “contisport contacts” that came on the E46 M3 disintegrated in half a HPDE. They couldn’t deal with the heat. Check the reviews, hopefully they are much improved.

This set will go on a 2004 Mustang...about 450 hp w/ significant suspension modifications.
I don’t expect they will last too long though as the car is so nose-heavy and it’s hard to avoid excessive wheelspin. ¯\_()_/¯

That seems to be a pretty popular tire with the Mustang crowd. The last set of Nittos I owned were essentially drag radials only in that they didn’t do much well but grip in a straight line. Are they still that way?

I’ve heard that about earlier Contis. These seem to hold up alright given they are strictly a street tire. I do think I’ll probably destroy them in a HPDE easily.

My priorities with tires were: 1) wet handling; 2) handling in general; 3) miles they’d go. Tires and suspension parts are so important - they keep you attached to the road.
I recall liking a set of Goodyear Eagles (something something) on my ‘97 SHO. But I haven’t bought tires for a car in 17 years.

I sold the car a few years ago so this was a while back. The Continentals lasted about a year if memory saves me correct - I replaced them with a set of Bridgestones (one of the potenza series I believe) which I subsequently had on the car until I sold it probably almost 2 years later and it still had decent tread left at that point.

Not a fan, they came stock on both my E46 and E90 M3's. They’re not a bad tire but pilot super sports are much better, and not too much more expensive.

I would seriously consider the PSS if you are sure about doing trackdays. Even though they cost more, you may get a lot longer life.

The DW is a great tire. I’ve used it and it’s all season brother DWS on a couple different cars.
Pros:
Overall grip is very high. Wonderful on the wet. Great treadwear. Very affordable (depending on size). Low impact/harshness. Quietest freaking tire I’ve ever (not) heard.
Cons: Kinda squishy sidewalls. Results in a bit of body roll and numb center steering response. The fact that Pilot Super Sports exist.
Check out Tire Rack for more info, it does well in comparos and consumer reviews.

I had a set of DWSs, but two of them could never be balanced very well and I dumped them for a set of Michelin Pilots after 5000 miles, (which I love.)

Get the Michelin Pilot Super Sports!!! They’re the only UHP summer tire with a tread life warranty, which says a lot. I’m on my third set and they are beyond awesome. They never run out of grip, at least not on my car, and when they do, I’ve read they do so progressively. They’re also very comfortable, and quiet. I love them. GET THEM!!!
